Termite Control: How Quickly They Can Decimate Your Home

You’ve seen the cartoons. Termites march to the home and quickly begin eating it up, beam by beam, roof tile by roof tile, then raid the furniture and consume it. In just seconds, the home no longer exists and the termites turn around and leave for the next home to eat.
While the cartoon is an exaggeration, the truth is not that far off. Termites can attack your home and decimate it. It may take several seasons to do it, but these pests can do massive and costly damage to your home. The bad news is that they can do their damage over many months. If you ignored some of the signs of termite damage back in March, now, in June, they have invaded other parts of your home and premises.
So, just how quickly can termites invade? Here are some facts:
- One termite takes over 6,000 years to eat through a 2,000-square-foot home. That would be fine if only one termite got into your home. However, a termite colony has over 60,000 termites in its population. All of these colony members will gnaw on your home’s timber, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year.
- A termite colony grows if your home has the right conditions. Termites live in warm climates. In the summer, the Central Maryland heat is perfect for termite colonies to expand. Some colonies can be as large as two million. As the temperatures drop in the evening, termites seek shelter. Your home functions as a perfect “hotel” for the colony. As the summer heat rises the next day, the termites increase their activity. That is when they do the most damage to a home.
- Termites also need to drink water regularly. They will die without it. So, if you have a pool, a lake, a creek nearby, or other body of water, they will feed off it which keeps them going.
- A home with poor ventilation or leaky pipes or plumbing also attracts termites. If these leaks aren’t repaired or the ventilation isn’t corrected, termites will reproduce in this moist environment.
Termite control is essential, or they will eat through your home. It may take a few months, but they will do thousands of dollars in damage to the wooden sections. They must be eliminated. A termite control technician will protect your home. They can remove the termites you have and keep the other ones out.
