Pest Shield, Inc. has treated wood-destroying insect infestations across Frederick County since 2011, and carpenter ants are among the most misread structural threats we see — often dismissed as a nuisance until the damage is already done. Owner Troy Yowell brings approximately 35 years of pest management experience to every inspection, and on-staff entomologist Jeffrey Allwine provides species-level diagnostic support when field identification needs confirmation. Pest Shield holds Maryland Department of Agriculture business license MDA #30263 and individual applicator certification MD Cert #19058, covering all wood-destroying insect treatment categories. With 338+ five-star reviews across Google and HomeAdvisor, we’re the company New Market homeowners call when they want the problem solved — not managed.

Four steps. No surprises. Same answer whether it's your first call or your tenth.
You reach Troy or someone on his team directly. No call center, no dispatcher, no routing.
Same-day or next-day for most calls. Emergency stinging-insect situations and real-estate WDI deadlines get priority.
We identify the species, locate entry points, and find the source — not just the symptom.
Written recommendation, straightforward pricing, no obligation. If you don't need treatment, we'll tell you.
The ants you see on your kitchen counter or window sill in spring may be foragers from an outdoor colony — or they may be the first visible sign of a satellite colony already established inside your walls. The difference matters, because one is a nuisance and the other is structural damage accumulating behind your drywall. In New Market’s wooded, semi-rural landscape, the conditions that produce large carpenter ant colonies are everywhere: mature hardwoods, moisture-stressed wood near crawl spaces and decks, and forested lot margins that put parent colonies within easy foraging range of your home.
Here’s what to look for, and what each signal means:
The important distinction: foragers entering from outside are a warning. Satellite colony activity inside the structure means excavation is already underway. Carpenter ant colonies grow slowly — a mature parent colony can take 3–6 years to establish — but satellite colonies in a structure can cause significant gallery damage over one to two seasons. New Market’s combination of wooded lots, older wood-framed homes, and the moisture conditions common to crawl spaces and deck framing creates ideal habitat for both parent colonies and the satellite colonies they send into structures. Visible ants are the late signal, not the early one.
60+ years of combined experience. Tell us what you’re seeing — we’ll come look, no obligation.
Troy came out immediately to look at our house and did find termites, he was very professional, friendly and made us feel very comfortable; he explained everything to us; we had did some comparsion shopping with other companies and didn’t get the comfortable feeling with the other companies, Pest Shield was by far the best, I would recommend Pest Shield to anyone, they are a company that you can trust to have your best interest at heart. Troy was the best.

Troy was very friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. He was able to work with my historic home (with difficult access) and treat for my termite infestation. He was very reasonable with cost as compared to other quotes, especially the big pest companies (which I would not recommend). He was incredibly respectful of my newly planted grass and garden (as he had to maneuver his supplies through it to treat). He even helped to troubleshoot a leak in that part of the house. His communication was very clear and thorough as well. Initial inspection and treatment were prompt! Would definitely recommend.

The technician was thorough and reassuring, as well as answering my questions with his in-depth knowledge of termites and carpenter ants. I would recommend Pest Shield to my neighbors and friends.

General pest & rodent control
Pest Shield treats carpenter ants as a wood-destroying pest — the same classification Maryland uses for termites — not as a general nuisance ant. That distinction drives the treatment approach. Where a general pest spray kills the foragers you can see, it leaves the colony intact. Pest Shield’s treatment targets the colony itself, using the same product and protocol applied to subterranean termite infestations: Termidor HE, with fipronil as the active ingredient.
Every job starts with a free inspection. Troy or Jeffrey will assess the property — exterior perimeter, crawl space, deck framing, window and door casings, any wood in contact with soil — to identify where forager trails are entering, where satellite colony activity is likely established, and what moisture or structural conditions are sustaining the infestation. Jeffrey Allwine’s entomological background supports species confirmation and colony behavior assessment when the situation calls for it. Troy’s 35 years of field experience means the inspection covers the structural vulnerabilities that a checklist approach misses.
The treatment is a Termidor HE perimeter application — applied around the foundation, entry points, and any areas of confirmed or suspected activity. Termidor HE works through a transfer effect: ants that contact the treated zone don’t die immediately. Instead, they carry the active ingredient back through the colony via normal contact and grooming behavior, spreading it to workers, reproductives, and eventually the queen. The colony is eliminated at the source, not just at the forager level. This is why Termidor HE produces colony eradication rather than population suppression — and why it’s the same product used for subterranean termite treatment in New Market.
| Treatment Detail | What It Means for You |
|---|---|
| One-time Termidor HE application | No repeat treatments required — the transfer effect handles the colony |
| 90-day colony eradication timeline | Most customers see activity decline within weeks; full eradication confirmed within 90 days |
| 15+ year residual effects | Termidor HE remains active in the treated zone long after the initial colony is gone, preventing re-establishment |
| 100% effective guarantee | If the treatment doesn’t work, Pest Shield comes back — no charge |
| Lifetime renewable warranty | The Termite Warranty Plan warranty can be renewed to maintain documented protection indefinitely |
This treatment is delivered under Pest Shield’s Termite Warranty Plan — the same plan used for subterranean termite treatment. The one-time application, 15+ year residual, and lifetime renewable warranty reflect the long-cycle nature of wood-destroying insect protection: the goal is not to schedule you for quarterly visits, but to eliminate the colony and protect the structure. After treatment, you’ll receive documentation of what was applied and where. Pest Shield follows up to confirm eradication is on track. The lifetime renewable warranty means that protection can be maintained and documented as long as you own the home — which matters if you ever sell, refinance, or need to demonstrate WDI treatment history. Termidor HE is an EPA-registered product; Pest Shield applies it as a targeted exterior perimeter treatment, which keeps interior exposure minimal and makes it safe for families and pets once the treated areas have dried.

New Market sits in eastern Frederick County along the US-40 corridor, roughly between Frederick and Mount Airy, with Interstate 70 running through its southern edge. The town is surrounded by a mix of wooded residential lots, agricultural land, and mature tree cover — conditions that sustain large carpenter ant colonies in stumps, fallen timber, and moisture-stressed trees within easy foraging distance of homes. Pest Shield serves New Market as part of its core Frederick County territory, with the same same-day and next-day scheduling available here as anywhere else in the service area.
The housing stock in and around New Market includes wood-framed construction with crawl spaces, older trim work, and deck structures that are particularly vulnerable to carpenter ant satellite colony establishment. Wooded lot margins mean forager pressure is persistent from spring through fall. Crawl spaces with any moisture history — common in this part of Frederick County — provide the damp, softened wood that carpenter ant colonies prefer for gallery excavation. Homes near forested edges or with mature hardwoods on the property carry elevated risk, especially where dead wood or root systems are close to the foundation. For broader seasonal pest pressure in the area, pest control in New Market covers the full range of threats that accompany this wooded environment.
The clearest physical distinction is body shape: carpenter ants have a pinched waist, bent (elbowed) antennae, and — when winged — front wings that are noticeably larger than the rear wings. Termite swarmers have a broad, uniform waist, straight beaded antennae, and wings of equal length. Carpenter ants are also significantly larger, typically ½ inch or more, and are black or dark reddish-black. In terms of damage evidence, carpenter ants leave frass — coarse sawdust mixed with insect parts — pushed out of their galleries; termites leave mud tubes and consume wood from the inside, leaving a papery shell. If you’re finding winged insects indoors in spring and aren’t certain which you’re dealing with, Pest Shield’s free inspection will confirm the species — Jeffrey Allwine, our on-staff entomologist, provides identification support when field ID needs backup.
One treatment is typically sufficient because Termidor HE works through a transfer effect — ants that contact the treated perimeter carry the active ingredient back to the colony through normal contact and grooming, eliminating workers, reproductives, and the queen rather than just the foragers you can see. Colony eradication is confirmed within 90 days in most cases. The 15+ year residual means the treated zone remains active long after the initial colony is gone, which prevents re-establishment from new colonies moving in from surrounding wooded areas. Pest Shield backs this with a 100% effective guarantee and a lifetime renewable warranty under the Termite Warranty Plan — if activity persists, they return at no charge.
The Termite Warranty Plan warranty covers the treated structure against carpenter ant and termite activity following Pest Shield’s Termidor HE application. “Lifetime renewable” means the warranty can be renewed on an ongoing basis — so protection and documentation remain current for as long as you own the home. This matters practically if you sell, refinance, or need to demonstrate WDI treatment history to a lender or buyer. The 15+ year residual of Termidor HE means the product itself remains active well beyond any single warranty period, but the renewable warranty keeps the coverage documented and transferable. Contact Pest Shield directly at (301) 829-0060 for current renewal terms.
Termidor HE is an EPA-registered product, and Pest Shield applies it as a targeted exterior perimeter treatment — which keeps interior exposure minimal. Once the treated areas have dried, the home is safe for children and pets. Pest Shield’s exterior-first approach is a documented practice across their service work: the goal is to keep chemistry outside the home and away from living spaces. Troy will advise you on any specific precautions relevant to your property at the time of treatment.
Act at the first sign — visible ants are a late indicator, not an early one. By the time you’re regularly seeing large black ants indoors, a satellite colony is likely already established inside the structure and excavation is underway. Carpenter ant colonies develop slowly, but the gallery damage accumulates over seasons. In New Market’s wooded environment, spring forager activity near wood-framed structures, crawl spaces, or deck framing is reason enough to schedule a free inspection. Early treatment eliminates the colony before gallery damage extends further; waiting until the infestation is obvious means more structural repair alongside the pest treatment.
