How it works
Four steps. No surprises. Same answer whether it's your first call or your tenth.
You reach Troy or someone on his team directly. No call center, no dispatcher, no routing.
Same-day or next-day for most calls. Emergency stinging-insect situations and real-estate WDI deadlines get priority.
We identify the species, locate entry points, and find the source — not just the symptom.
Written recommendation, straightforward pricing, no obligation. If you don't need treatment, we'll tell you.
If you’ve spotted a cockroach in your kitchen or bathroom, there’s almost certainly a larger hidden population behind walls, under appliances, or inside cabinet voids. German cockroaches — the dominant indoor species in Central Maryland — reproduce quickly and stay hidden during the day, which means one visible roach typically signals an established harborage nearby.
Mt. Airy homes give cockroaches what they need to thrive: moisture in crawl spaces and basements, warmth from kitchens and utility rooms, and entry points through plumbing penetrations, foundation gaps, and attached garages. Older construction with block foundations and crawl spaces is especially vulnerable, but newer homes aren’t immune — cockroaches travel in on groceries, cardboard, and used appliances. Indoor cockroach pressure is year-round, but activity often spikes in fall as temperatures drop and roaches already inside become more active in heated spaces. One-time over-the-counter sprays usually knock down what you can see while leaving the underlying harborage untouched, which is why infestations come back.
60+ years of combined experience. Tell us what you’re seeing — we’ll come look, no obligation.
Troy was excellent. He came on time and was very friendly and professional. He explained everything in great detail and did the inspection and treatment same day. The inspection was very thorough. Price was reasonable compared to other pest companies. I highly recommend Pest Shield.

We chose Pest Shield after contacting a few different pest control companies because we liked how Troy took his time to explain his experience and the science behind the products he uses. Troy has been working with us to manage two separate infestations and he has been incredibly generous with his time, energy and expertise. After speaking with my husband, he offered to come out the same day and as he inspected the house, he offered useful suggestions for ways to manage other things like spiders in the windows. We have a young son who is immunocompromised and Troy was very respectful of the safety precautions that we are currently taking. We are so grateful for his knowledge, promptness and kindness.

Pest Shield has been absolutely wonderful! We had an issue with mice, and Pest Shield was the ONLY company we could get to come out to our house on the same day which happened to be a Sunday. The technician, Troy, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and honest. He saved my husband and I a lot of money. Most companies would have taken advantage of the situation. It’s been 30 days and we have not had any more issues. We were so satisfied with the company and the services we received, that we also signed up for the pest (bugs) control service last month. Since then, we have not seen any bugs (including those nasty centipedes and camel crickets)!!! Thank you so much, Pest Shield!!!!!

General pest & rodent control
Every cockroach job starts with a free inspection. Troy or one of our technicians walks through the kitchen, bathrooms, basement, utility areas, and any harborage zones you’ve identified — looking for live activity, droppings, egg casings, and the moisture and entry-point conditions driving the problem. We identify the species (German cockroaches behave and harbor differently than American cockroaches found in basements and crawl spaces), assess the scope of the infestation, and explain exactly what we recommend and why before any treatment begins. When field identification isn’t conclusive, samples go to Jeffrey Allwine, our staff entomologist, for laboratory ID.
Treatment is targeted to where cockroaches actually live, not sprayed broadly through the house. Pest Shield uses an exterior-first approach — perimeter treatment around the foundation, utility penetrations, and entry points keeps chemical exposure inside the home minimal. For cockroach work specifically, we also treat harborage areas directly: under and behind appliances, inside cabinet voids, around bathroom vanities, behind baseboards. Products are EPA-approved, and nontoxic bio-pesticide options are available for homes with young children, pets, or family members with sensitivities.
Initial treatment knocks down the active population, but cockroaches are a recurring-pressure pest — the same moisture, warmth, and entry points that brought them in the first time are still there. That’s why most cockroach customers move onto our Standard Care Plan:
When the initial work is done, you’ll get a clear explanation of what we found, what we treated, and what to watch for. We follow up to confirm the population has crashed, and if you see anything between scheduled visits as a Standard Care Plan customer, we come back at no charge. If a plan doesn’t make sense for your situation, we’ll tell you that too — we’re documented across dozens of reviews recommending against ongoing service when one treatment is enough.

Mt. Airy straddles the Carroll and Frederick county line along Route 27, with Interstate 70 running just south of town and the wooded ridges of the Parr’s Ridge spine shaping the local terrain. Homes here range from older Main Street properties with stone or block foundations and crawl spaces to newer developments built into former farmland along the edges of town.
That mix matters for cockroach work. Carroll County’s clay-heavy soils trap moisture against foundations, and older Mt. Airy crawl spaces and basement utility penetrations give German and American cockroaches the humidity, warmth, and harborage they need year-round. Treating cockroaches well in this area means knowing which entry points and conditions actually drive the problem — and that same local knowledge supports pest control in Mt. Airy across every pest type we handle here.
One treatment usually knocks down the active population, but cockroaches return when the conditions that brought them in — moisture, entry points, food access — aren’t addressed long-term. For most Mt. Airy homes, we recommend pairing initial treatment with our Standard Care Plan: bi-monthly exterior treatment every 60 days, a 100% effective guarantee, and free retreatment between scheduled visits if activity reappears. If your situation is straightforward enough that ongoing service isn’t needed, we’ll tell you that — we’re not in the business of selling plans that don’t help.
Yes. We use EPA-approved products and offer nontoxic bio-pesticide options for homes with children, pets, or family members with sensitivities. Our exterior-first approach keeps most of the treatment around the foundation perimeter and entry points rather than inside living areas. When interior treatment is needed in cabinet voids or behind appliances, we use targeted application in places kids and pets don’t access — and Troy will walk you through exactly what’s being applied and where before any work starts.
The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is by far the most common indoor species in Central Maryland — small, light brown, and the species you’ll typically find in kitchens and bathrooms. American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) are larger and show up more often in basements, crawl spaces, and sewer-adjacent areas. They behave and harbor differently, which is why species identification matters. When field ID isn’t conclusive, samples go to our staff entomologist, Jeffrey Allwine, for laboratory confirmation.
Same-day or next-day service is standard for active cockroach situations. When you call (301) 829-0060, you’re talking directly to Troy, office staff, or a technician — not a dispatcher or call center — and we schedule based on what’s actually going on at your house. Sunday and after-hours service is documented across our reviews, and we don’t charge extra for it.
For most cockroach situations, yes — the Standard Care Plan‘s 60-day exterior cadence prevents the same conditions that caused the infestation from producing another one. But not always. Troy is documented across dozens of reviews telling homeowners when they don’t need ongoing service, and we’d rather give you an honest answer after seeing the property than pre-sell a plan over the phone. The free inspection is the right starting point — call (301) 829-0060 and we’ll come take a look.
