How it works
Four steps. No surprises. Same answer whether it's your first call or your tenth.
You reach Troy or someone on his team directly. No call center, no dispatcher, no routing.
Same-day or next-day for most calls. Emergency stinging-insect situations and real-estate WDI deadlines get priority.
We identify the species, locate entry points, and find the source — not just the symptom.
Written recommendation, straightforward pricing, no obligation. If you don't need treatment, we'll tell you.
A single roach in the kitchen at 2 a.m. usually isn’t a stray — it’s the one that didn’t make it back to harborage before the lights came on. Cockroaches are nocturnal and reproductive cycles are fast, so what looks like a small problem this week is often a much larger one in 30 days. The signs below tell you the colony is already established somewhere in the structure.
Two species account for most Frederick infestations. German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) are the smaller, light-brown indoor species with two dark stripes behind the head — they live almost exclusively inside, prefer warm humid spaces near appliances and plumbing, and reproduce faster than any other pest cockroach. American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) are the larger reddish-brown roaches that typically enter from outside through basement gaps, sewer lines, and foundation penetrations, often appearing first in lower levels before moving up.
The health dimension is worth taking seriously without overstating it. Cockroach droppings, shed skins, and saliva contain proteins that trigger allergic reactions and aggravate asthma — a particular concern in homes with children or anyone with respiratory sensitivities. Roaches also mechanically transport bacteria from drains and waste into food prep surfaces. A one-time spray that knocks down visible roaches but ignores how they’re entering or where they’re harboring often produces a few quiet weeks followed by a worse infestation, which is why the underlying entry points and moisture conditions matter as much as the chemical treatment itself.
60+ years of combined experience. Tell us what you’re seeing — we’ll come look, no obligation.

We have used Pest Shield twice so far and each time we had an exceptional experience. We found Troy to be very honest, knowledgeable and professional. This company is built on integrity and will not overcharge you for services that are not needed. They know the biology behind the pests and the problem and won’t just spray to spray something. I highly recommend this company.

General pest & rodent control
Every cockroach job starts with a free property inspection — Troy or one of the technicians walks the property before recommending treatment. The inspection identifies the species (German or American behaves differently and the treatment plan reflects that), locates harborage points and entry routes, and assesses moisture conditions that are sustaining the population. Where field identification isn’t conclusive, samples go to Jeffrey Allwine for laboratory confirmation, with results typically back within two days.
Treatment follows Pest Shield‘s exterior-first methodology. The goal is to cut off entry and treat the perimeter first, so the structure stops being a destination for roaches moving in from outside — and so chemical exposure inside the home stays minimal. Interior treatment targets active harborage where it’s warranted, with EPA-approved products selected for the specific situation. For homes with young children, pets, or family members with respiratory sensitivities, nontoxic bio-pesticide options are available and discussed during the inspection.
Cockroach reproduction is fast enough that a single treatment, even a thorough one, often leaves enough surviving eggs to rebuild a population within weeks. That’s why the Standard Care Plan is the right shape for most cockroach work in Frederick — every 60 days, before the next generation reaches breeding age, with no need to be home for treatment since the focus is exterior. The plan carries a 100% effective guarantee, and free retreatment between visits means the work isn’t finished when the technician leaves. It’s finished when the problem is solved.

Frederick sits at the intersection of I-70 and US-15 in the Monocacy Valley, with a housing mix that ranges from 18th- and 19th-century stone and brick homes in the downtown historic district to mid-century neighborhoods along Rosemont and Baker Park, and newer construction expanding toward the Catoctin Mountain foothills and the Monocacy River corridor.
That housing mix matters for cockroach pressure. Older homes downtown carry the foundation gaps, pipe penetrations, and basement moisture that American cockroaches exploit when entering from outside, while Frederick’s humid summers accelerate German cockroach reproduction in any kitchen or bathroom where conditions allow. New construction at the city’s edges disturbs ground cover and pushes outdoor roach populations toward structures — and those same conditions that invite roaches also create openings for other pests, which is why many Frederick homeowners pair cockroach treatment with comprehensive pest control in Frederick.
For most cockroach situations, ongoing service is the right approach — not because we want to sell you a plan, but because of how cockroaches reproduce. A single treatment knocks down visible roaches and active harborage, but egg casings are resistant to many treatments and the next generation can reach breeding age before you’d notice them. Pest Shield’s Standard Care Plan treats every 60 days, which interrupts that cycle before it rebuilds, and includes free retreatment between visits if activity reappears. For very small early-stage situations, Troy will tell you honestly if a single treatment is all you need.
Yes. Pest Shield uses EPA-approved products, and nontoxic bio-pesticide options are available for homes with young children, pets, or family members with respiratory sensitivities — Troy discusses options during the free inspection so you choose what’s right for your household. The exterior-first approach also keeps most of the treatment outside the home, which minimizes interior exposure. Customers with crawling babies, immunocompromised children, and dogs have used the service without issue.
Maybe, maybe not — that’s what the free inspection is for. A single American cockroach that wandered in from a basement gap is a different situation from a single German cockroach in the kitchen, because German cockroaches live almost exclusively indoors and rarely travel alone. The inspection identifies the species and checks for droppings, egg casings, and harborage signs that confirm whether there’s an established population. If there isn’t, Troy will tell you that directly.
You’ll typically see a noticeable drop within a few days and continued decline over the next two to three weeks as treatment reaches roaches that were sheltered during the initial visit. It’s normal — and actually a good sign — to see some increased activity in the first 24–48 hours as roaches come out of harborage and contact the treatment. If activity hasn’t substantially resolved within a few weeks, the Standard Care Plan’s free retreatment guarantee means Pest Shield comes back at no charge to address what’s left.
Same-day or next-day service is typical for Frederick. When you call (301) 829-0060, you talk directly with Troy, office staff, or a technician — not a dispatcher or call center — so scheduling happens in one conversation. For active infestations or situations involving family members with allergies or respiratory issues, Troy prioritizes same-day response when the schedule allows, and Sunday and after-hours service have been provided at no extra charge when circumstances warrant.
