How it works
Four steps. No surprises. Same answer whether it's your first call or your tenth.
You reach Troy or someone on his team directly. No call center, no dispatcher, no routing.
Same-day or next-day for most calls. Emergency stinging-insect situations and real-estate WDI deadlines get priority.
We identify the species, locate entry points, and find the source — not just the symptom.
Written recommendation, straightforward pricing, no obligation. If you don't need treatment, we'll tell you.
Subterranean termites — specifically Reticulitermes flavipes, the Eastern subterranean termite — are the dominant termite species in Frederick County. They work silently inside wood and soil, and most homeowners don’t notice them until damage is already well underway. Knowing what to look for is the first step toward catching an infestation before it becomes a structural problem.
The most important thing to understand about subterranean termites is that visible signs typically lag well behind actual damage. A colony feeding inside a floor joist or wall stud can go undetected for years. By the time mud tubes appear on a foundation wall or swarmers emerge inside a home, the colony is established and has likely been active for some time.
Middletown-area properties carry specific risk factors that make termite pressure higher than average. Frederick County’s clay-heavy soils drain slowly and retain moisture for extended periods — exactly the damp, stable soil environment that Reticulitermes flavipes colonies require. The Middletown Valley’s older residential stock includes many homes with crawl spaces, wood framing close to grade, aging vapor barriers, and foundation areas that may not have been inspected in years or decades. Spring swarm season — typically March through May in Central Maryland — is the most common trigger for homeowner calls, but the underlying colony pressure exists year-round. Homes in the area also face pressure from carpenter ants in Middletown, which similarly target moisture-damaged wood and can be mistaken for termite activity.

Troy came out immediately to look at our house and did find termites, he was very professional, friendly and made us feel very comfortable; he explained everything to us; we had did some comparsion shopping with other companies and didn’t get the comfortable feeling with the other companies, Pest Shield was by far the best, I would recommend Pest Shield to anyone, they are a company that you can trust to have your best interest at heart. Troy was the best.

Troy is a true professional. He accommodated my schedule by coming after hours to do an inspection. I had gotten a “free inspection” from another BIG, WELL-KNOWN company and they had me believing I had live termites. I was suspicious when they didn’t show up for the initial treatment, and more so when I got conflicting information from people at their company. Turns out I didn’t have termites, and Troy was straight up, didn’t try to rip me off with a service I didn’t need. He SAVED me $1400 and I will surely use him in the future if I ever have a pest problem of any kind! Go Pest Shield!

Troy was very friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. He was able to work with my historic home (with difficult access) and treat for my termite infestation. He was very reasonable with cost as compared to other quotes, especially the big pest companies (which I would not recommend). He was incredibly respectful of my newly planted grass and garden (as he had to maneuver his supplies through it to treat). He even helped to troubleshoot a leak in that part of the house. His communication was very clear and thorough as well. Initial inspection and treatment were prompt! Would definitely recommend.

General pest & rodent control
Pest Shield’s termite treatment begins with a free inspection — a thorough assessment of the home’s interior, exterior, crawl space, and foundation perimeter. The inspection identifies active termite activity, entry points, areas of wood-to-soil contact, moisture conditions, and any structural vulnerabilities that increase risk. Jeffrey Allwine, Pest Shield‘s on-staff entomologist, performs termite protection treatments. His background includes pest management work on U.S. military bases in Africa — the kind of high-stakes, high-pressure environment that produces a different level of diagnostic precision than residential work alone. Troy Yowell, Pest Shield’s owner, has documented experience taking homeowners directly into crawl spaces to show them exactly where termites are entering and what the treatment will address.
Treatment is delivered under Pest Shield’s Termite Warranty Plan, using Termidor® HE — the industry’s most proven subterranean termite termiticide. Here’s what distinguishes Termidor HE from other approaches:
| Termidor HE | Bait Station Systems |
|---|---|
| Non-repellent — termites cannot detect it and continue moving through treated soil | Termites must find and feed on bait stations, which can take months |
| Transfer effect — termites carry the active ingredient back to the colony, eliminating it from within | Colony elimination is slower and less certain; monitoring visits required |
| One-time application to soil perimeter, porch slabs, and garage areas | Ongoing station maintenance and monitoring required indefinitely |
| 15+ year residual in treated soil | No lasting soil barrier established |
| Colony eradication within 90 days | Timeline to full colony elimination is variable and often longer |
Termidor HE termite treatment is applied as a continuous liquid treatment around the home’s foundation perimeter and into porch slabs and garage areas — creating a treated zone that termites move through without detecting. As they forage, they pick up the active ingredient and transfer it to nestmates through normal colony contact, eliminating the colony from within. The 15+ year residual means the treated soil continues protecting the structure long after the initial application.
Under Pest Shield’s Termite Warranty Plan, the treatment carries a 100% effective guarantee and a lifetime renewable warranty. Colony eradication is expected within 90 days of treatment. The warranty is renewable — meaning the protection can be maintained and documented over the life of the home, which matters for future real estate transactions. Pest Shield also holds MDA #30263 and MD Certified applicator #19058, covering all required Maryland Department of Agriculture licensing categories for termite treatment.
Termidor HE is applied to the soil perimeter — not broadcast indoors — and is EPA-approved for residential use. It is safe for occupied homes; no need to vacate during or after treatment. Families with children and pets can return to normal routines without interruption. Troy has been documented being straightforward with homeowners about exactly what was applied, where, and what to expect — consistent with Pest Shield’s approach of explaining the work rather than just doing it.

Middletown sits on the floor of the Middletown Valley, flanked by South Mountain to the east and Catoctin Mountain to the west. The valley’s geography creates a natural moisture bowl — slower air drainage, higher relative humidity, and soils that stay damp longer than the surrounding uplands. Frederick County’s clay-heavy soils compound this effect: clay retains water well after rain events, maintaining the consistently moist soil conditions that Eastern subterranean termite colonies require to survive and expand. Pest Shield operates out of Mt. Airy and serves all of Frederick County, with Middletown well within its regular service area.
Older homes in and around Middletown’s historic district frequently have crawl spaces with aging or absent vapor barriers, wood framing at or near grade, and foundation areas that may not have been professionally inspected in years. These are the structural conditions — wood-to-soil contact, persistent moisture, limited ventilation — that make subterranean termite establishment not just possible but predictable. For homeowners who want comprehensive pest control in Middletown that addresses the full range of pressures these conditions create, Pest Shield’s broader service offerings extend well beyond termite treatment. The same clay soils that make Middletown Valley farmland productive also make the foundations beneath its older homes a reliable target for Reticulitermes flavipes colonies each spring swarm season.
Pest Shield’s Termite Warranty Plan covers the treated structure under a 100% effective guarantee backed by a lifetime renewable warranty. The Termidor HE application carries a 15+ year residual in the treated soil, meaning the chemical barrier remains active long after the initial treatment. “Renewable” means the warranty can be extended and maintained over the life of the home — which matters practically when you sell the property, refinance, or simply want documented ongoing protection. To renew, contact Pest Shield; the process does not require retreatment unless there is a new infestation finding.
Termidor HE is a non-repellent liquid termiticide applied directly to the soil around your foundation — termites move through the treated zone without detecting it, pick up the active ingredient, and transfer it to nestmates through normal colony contact, eliminating the colony from within. Bait station systems work differently: stations are placed around the perimeter and termites must find and feed on them, which can take months, and the approach requires ongoing monitoring visits rather than establishing a lasting soil barrier. Termidor HE eradicates the colony within 90 days and leaves a 15+ year residual in the treated soil; bait systems require indefinite maintenance with no equivalent residual protection.
No — Termidor HE is applied to the soil perimeter around your foundation, porch slabs, and garage areas, not broadcast inside the home. It is EPA-approved for residential use, and there is no requirement to vacate during or after treatment. Families with children and pets can continue normal routines without interruption. Pest Shield will explain exactly what was applied and where before leaving, so you know what to expect.
A termite inspection is a diagnostic assessment — Pest Shield examines your home’s interior, exterior, crawl space, and foundation to identify active termite activity, entry points, and risk conditions, then recommends treatment if warranted. A Wood-Destroying Insect (WDI) inspection produces a standardized written report required by lenders for VA loans, refinances, and some home sales; it documents findings across all wood-destroying insects (termites, carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles) in a format acceptable to banks and real estate transactions. If you’re treating a known infestation or want a free assessment, a termite inspection is the right starting point. If you’re closing on a home or refinancing, you likely need the WDI report specifically — Pest Shield performs both.
Yes — a free inspection is available to any new client regardless of whether visible signs are present, and inspecting before signs appear is often the better outcome. Most termite damage is hidden; an inspection of the crawl space, foundation perimeter, and sill plates can identify risk conditions and early activity that wouldn’t be visible from inside the home. As for treatment timeline: after a Termidor HE application, colony eradication typically occurs within 90 days. You may continue to see some termite activity in the weeks immediately following treatment as the active ingredient moves through the colony — that activity is part of the process, not a sign the treatment isn’t working.
